AUSTRALIA'S SPORT, FITNESS & RECREATION INDUSTRY 

According to the Australian Bureau of statistics, there are approximately 68,907 people employed within the sports and recreation industry. Today, more and more people are taking part in physical activity, either for the health benefits it provides or purely for social and recreational purposes. This increase in demand means Australia needs more skilled people who are able to provide these services in a safe, fun and professional manner.

There are a diverse range of job roles such as: 
  • Sport Coaches
  • Recreation Assistants
  • Developing and Professional Athletes
  • Fitness Instructors 
  • Sport Development Officers. 

​Industry overview

There are 68,907 people employed in occupations covered by these sectors according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The sport and outdoor recreation sectors also rely heavily on volunteers, with around 2.3 million people or 14 per cent of adults in Australia population working voluntarily in sport and physical recreation organisations.
​
There are a diverse set of business and organisation types in these industries. There are not-for-profit organisations including many volunteer-run organisations; local, state or federal government managed bodies; and businesses that vary greatly in size, from large corporations to small one person operations.

The sport, fitness and recreation industries plays a crucial role in the health and wellbeing of Australians. The positive impact they have on the health of both the population, and by extension, our economy, cannot be underestimated. As well as physical health, the industry promotes mental health of individuals and the health of society overall by building social cohesion and inclusion, especially among those who are most likely to feel the most excluded.

There are significant overlaps between these sectors and other industries, such as tourism, education and health.

​Careers in Fitness

Exercise professionals have typically been employed to instruct individuals and/or groups in traditional settings, such as in fitness centres or studios. However, new roles have emerged in a range of settings. They include those involved in fitness instruction, consultation and management, in community centres, sporting facilities, in the workplace, outdoors and as part of mobile services.

​More than ever before exercise professionals are able to plan and extend their careers by delivering a range of services in various settings, to a larger proportion of the community.

​There is also a range of specialisations in these roles to choose from, including personal trainer, gym instructor, group exercise instructor, aqua instructor, children’s instructor and older client trainer.

​Careers in Recreation

Recreation covers community-orientated, recreational activities in a variety of settings. It includes community sport, aquatics, personal development programs and rehabilitation programs. From organising facility programs, to working for local government as a recreation officer or supervising the community pool, there and many different job roles that require a wide range of skills. Working in this sector is very rewarding if you enjoy making a difference in the community and are looking for an exciting career.
